Several students with special needs held an open discussion with the leadership of the University of Prishtina (UP) at the Rectorate. They addressed the need for the continuous improvement of learning conditions, physical access to university facilities, and post-graduation employment opportunities.
During the meeting, both parties acknowledged that these students are an added value to the University of Prishtina and must be given the opportunity to be equal to everyone else and just as successful.
It was also recognized that UP has made significant progress compared to the past in providing better educational opportunities for students with special needs and that physical access to facilities has been improved. However, it was stated that there is always room to do even better.
The attending students raised the need for more literature and materials printed in the Braille alphabet, which is used by people with visual impairments. They also suggested enabling students with special needs to gradually become more self-reliant in preparing for their studies and the job market.
The discussion also covered the employment challenges facing graduates, and the possibility of organizing an awareness campaign was considered. This campaign would focus on the implementation of the Law on Training, Retraining, and Employment of Persons with Disabilities, which obliges employers to have one employee with special needs for every 50 workers.
Last year as well, on December 3, 2024, their international day, the UP leadership welcomed students with special needs. Twenty of these UP students are among the recipients of scholarships for the 2023/'24 and 2024/'25 academic years.
