Professor Zanfina Ademi of Australia’s Monash University, now affiliated with the University of Prishtina, delivered a lecture at the Pharmacy Section of the University of Prishtina’s Faculty of Medicine.
The professor from the academic diaspora, who is the world’s most‑cited Albanian woman scholar, spoke to fourth‑year students about how medicines are reimbursed in the pharmaceutical system, using Australia’s health‑care economy as an example.
Unlike Kosovo, which only provides funding for a list of essential medicines, Australia has several official evaluation steps for a drug before it is covered. In Australia, when a new drug for a certain condition enters the market, it is assessed for how well it works, its cost‑effectiveness, and its impact on the budget, and is compared with existing drugs for the same illness. A new drug receives government support in Australia if it improves patients’ quality of life and extends their lives.
Professor Zanfina Ademi noted that in some countries, besides how well a drug works, its cost‑effectiveness, and its budget impact, its social benefit is also considered. If a drug improves quality of life and life expectancy for patients with serious illnesses, allowing them to live without a caregiver, it directly helps the country’s economy because people who would have had to care for sick relatives at home can instead join the workforce.
While answering questions after her talk, Professor Ademi encouraged University of Prishtina students to commit to making change, even though she acknowledged that change is very hard and takes a lot of work. Zanfina Ademi will be teaching Pharmaceutical Management part‑time in the University of Prishtina’s Pharmacy Section.
The day before the lecture, the distinguished professor met with Vice‑Rectors Rozafa Basha, Albana Berisha‑Qehaja, Majlinda Gjelaj, and Adem Beha.
The Vice‑Rectors praised Professor Ademi’s willingness and that of other researchers from the academic diaspora to contribute to the University of Prishtina. The honored professor, in turn, expressed her pleasure at the cooperation and her visit to the University of Prishtina.
Prof. Zanfina Ademi became affiliated with the University of Prishtina at the Senate meeting on February 20, 2026, under the Regulation on Transfer, the “Brain Gain” program, and special provisions for recruiting academic staff in exceptional cases. The program aims to bring accomplished professionals from the world’s 400 top universities to the University of Prishtina. So far, eight professors from internationally recognized universities have joined the University of Prishtina under this regulation.
