In a meeting with the Head of the OSCE Mission in Kosovo, Mr. Gerard McGurk, discussions covered overcoming past divisions, creating a more integrated society, the Balkanistics Programme at the Faculty of Philology, and some of the long-standing challenges the University of Prishtina has faced.
The British diplomat leading the OSCE Mission was informed by university leadership that ongoing efforts are being made alongside many other commitments to the university and society to restore and bring back into use all properties that are vital for the university’s operations.
Both sides agreed that academic issues, as well as property matters, should be dealt with justly and without political influence. The Head of the OSCE in Kosovo offered his and the mission’s experience in supporting honest dialogue built on mutual trust.
The meeting also addressed moving beyond past divisions, respecting diversity, and creating opportunities for a more open and integrated society, so that current and future generations do not face the same divisions and violence experienced in the past.
Rector Prof. Arben Hajrullahu noted that the University of Prishtina reserves places for non-majority communities living in Kosovo, and emphasized that students from all communities are warmly welcomed at the university.
The Head of the OSCE Mission was also informed that the Balkanistics Programme at the Faculty of Philology plans to begin admitting new students starting in the 2026/'27 academic year.
Mr. Gerard McGurk, Head of the OSCE in Kosovo, was accompanied by the Director of the OSCE Department for Human Rights and Communities, Ms. Kavya Rajan, and the National Program Officer for Community Policies, Mr. Artan Kasumi. They were welcomed by Rector Prof. Arben Hajrullahu, Vice-Rector for Internationalization and Academic Development Prof. Rozafa Basha, and Vice-Rector for Teaching, Academic Staff Affairs, and Publications Prof. Adem Beha.
In August 2025, the OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities, Christophe Kamp, also visited the University of Prishtina Rectorate.
